Chris joined CGW in 2013 and looks after the overall management and strategic direction of the company. He lends his knowledge of financial and client management to a number of projects and has been steering the company through significant system improvement, growth and change over the past few years. Recently he led the sale of a portion of CGW to Wilton Joubert creating a launching pad for growth on a national scale.

Chris’ experience includes leading staff, and managing financial and commercial functions for large businesses in retail, science and technology, consulting, and horticulture as well as leading a team of specialist professional advisors in a large accounting practice. He has a degree and post graduate qualifications in Accounting and Management, is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the Institute of Directors.

Chris enjoys getting into the outdoors tramping, mountain biking, kayaking, and climbing, and has travelled extensively; visiting the some remote parts of the world on various adventures.

Vannessa joined CGW in 2019 as Director - Projects. She is responsible for the direction and oversight of the internal project management team with a key focus on multi-discipline design delivery and contract & construction management.

Having originally started out her career as a Chemical and Materials Engineer, Vannessa has developed her knowledge and experience having had worked in larger consultancies and more recently running her own successful project management company Delta Project Management for over a decade.

She has significant key experience in management of large scale engineering & construction projects in multi-discipline design sectors. She has been involved in multi-sector project management of commercial, residential property, industrial production and specifically in the oil & gas, aquacultural, pharmaceutical/nutraceutical and consumer foods sectors.

In her spare time, Vannessa enjoys all activities associated with the ocean, snow skiing and music.

Ian Hussey – Principal - Land & Infrastructure

Ian’s background is in complex multi staged residential and commercial developments and infrastructure design with a focus on element interface and work package demarcation. With over 20 years in engineering consultancies Ian understands what is needed to deliver engineering solutions for stormwater attenuation and treatment, flood channel 3D modelling, wastewater pumpstation, for wastewater treatment facilities and roading infrastructure - learnt across numerous projects nationally and overseas.

These days Ian is based in the Nelson region and acts as project engineer overseeing project teams, deliverables, and providing that key interface between the engineer and client.   Ian isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions with a sharp lens focused on the detail to understand how the various work component fit together from each service discipline.

Recently Ian has been leading various local authority and commercial client projects.  His most recent success was managing CGW’s delivery of geotechnical services and civil design of infrastructure and carparking for the $32M redevelopment of the Nelson Airport Terminal.

Away from the office, Ian loves working with recycled timber and the odd DIY project while juggling family life.

Andy Reid - Senior Structural Engineer

Andy has over 15yrs experience working in engineering design and fabrication. He has worked with CGW since the Stockton CHPP project of 2007, coming from a background of project work in marine and offshore projects. Initially specialising in industrial steel design and detailing, he has widened his skillset to include engineered timber and seismic design of low to mid-rise buildings.

Andy has a good practical knowledge of modelling and analysis techniques, including finite element analysis, and where each may bring value to a project. He is knowledgeable in displacement based design of structures and the use of hybrid energy dissipation systems such as post tensioned rocking walls. He has a strong interest in pushing structures beyond current code required design, to systems incorporating damage avoidance or other best practice detailing that achieves high performance without necessarily costing a great deal more to construct.

While not a geotech engineer, Andy has a strong interest in the field and where geotech overlaps with building structural design.

Andy loves his sailing, fishing and freediving, all sports that he manages to share with his two young sons.

Audrey Farreyre - Senior Structural Engineer

Audrey joined CGW in 2020 as a senior structural engineer. After graduating from a Master of Science (MSc) in Structural Engineering in Sweden and France, she moved to New Zealand.

She has over 14 years of local and overseas experience. Her expertise includes concept and detailed design, foundation design, deign of retaining structures and construction monitoring. Audrey has worked on small to large scale multi-disciplinary projects from residential to commercial through to large dams and hydro schemes.

Audrey is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) of Engineering New Zealand since 2014.

In her spare time, Audrey loves making the most of what Nelson has to offer and enjoys sea swimming, trail running and cycling.

Brandon Kay - Senior Project Manager

Brandon joined CGW in 2019 and is the company’s senior project manager. He brings a culmination of over 10 years knowledge in the building and development sector, bringing with him strong project oversight, team management and client management skills to deliver a high level of service to the CGW experience. Brandon’s focus is to ensure that the highly experienced engineering services that CGW provides is equally matched by strong relationship development with our customers and the smooth delivery of their projects. Brandon also brings experience in and a passion for business development and client management.

Brandon’s experience includes several years in property management and project development for one of New Zealand’s largest private retail property portfolio developers, along with a number of years’ experience in leading teams responsible for property/site development, facilities oversight and operation and management of hospital wide facilities including maintenance/engineering services for a district health board. He has a degree in Design specialising in Visual Communication and has completed a Certificate in Business – First Line Management.

Brandon enjoys getting into the outdoors, in particular camping with his young family and mountaineering with close friends. He also likes to ply his practical skills to various projects around the home and loves getting out on the bike or boat for a bit of fun with friends and family.

Stephen Whyte - Lead Water Engineer

Stephen joined CGW in 2019 with over 14 years of engineering experience. Stephen has a broad range of skills which include engineering, project management, construction, leadership and commercial knowledge, including experience with working for local government.

He has led a wide range of water and civil projects in commercial, residential and government sectors. During these projects he has been involved in various stages from strategic business case through to design and modeling, to tender evaluation and construction monitoring.

When not working, Stephen enjoys the outdoors and likes to spend his spare time with family, playing golf and travelling.

Geoff Knowler - Environmental Engineer

Geoff came to CGW in 2003 and is involved in Environmental/Civil Engineering and Construction Supervision.  Since his arrival, he has been involved in a wide range of infrastructure projects, from both a construction supervision role and a design perspective.  These projects, both large and small, have ranged from water treatment plants, both potable and waste water, stormwater upgrades, road and pavement rehabilitations and sewer renewals through to subdivisions, culverts, pipelines, asset assessments, retaining walls and earthworks and many other projects.

Having both a design focus and experience in the practical application of engineering means Geoff is well placed to anticipate issues that may arise during a project or to resolve issues as they become apparent. Geoff’s thoroughness and attention to detail has paid dividends on projects many times over.

Outside of work, Geoff has travelled extensively, spending a number of years backpacking around the world, before settling in Nelson.  Now he is enjoying renovation, decorating and landscaping projects at his home and spending time with his family, although he still gets to indulge his interest for travelling and exploring every now and then.

Matthew Smith - Civil Engineer

Matthew initially joined CGW in 2002 as an Engineering Cadet. Following graduation he spent two years in Westport before he left for his OE in 2011, returning 2 years later to join the CGW team again. Matthew is a Civil Engineer with 15 years’ experience in many aspects of civil engineering from project conception to completion. 

Matthew’s experience has been primarily in two sectors of engineering; civil design utilising computer design programs such as 12d Model and MX, and site supervision. He has worked on a number of large projects including site supervision of the $130million Stockton Mine CHPP, Westport, a £70million refurb at 7-9 Buckingham Gate, London, the Crossrail Project, London and design and supervision of the roading, carpark and stormwater works for the $30million Nelson Airport upgrade, Nelson. 

Matthew travelled extensively on his way to Europe and back and now enjoys the outdoor lifestyle that living in Nelson brings.

Daniel Welwood - Civil & Environmental Engineer

Daniel joined the CGW Environmental Team in 2016 after six years as one of our clients with the Nelson City Council. He leverages his knowledge and experience from a variety of public infrastructure and community asset projects to lead design solutions from concept through to completion.

Daniel’s experience includes infrastructure and utility design, project and contract management, local government regulations and requirements, option evaluation and decision making, and consultation and communication with customers and stakeholders. He approaches his projects with practicality, operational value, and long-term ownership in mind. He has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and is a member of Engineering New Zealand.

Daniel competes in a variety of sports such as golf, inline hockey, and soccer. He was a member of the New Zealand Inline Hockey Association’s National Championship (Open Senior Division) gold medal teams in 2015 and 2016. He also enjoys getting into the outdoors tramping and mountain biking.

Hamish joined CGW in 2014 and carries out structural and fire design engineering for CGW’s clients, with occasional demand for the thermal and process engineering knowledge from his previous career as a mechanical engineer in the energy sector.

His thirst for new knowledge, coupled with the market demand for fire engineering has led CGW to support his pursuit of a Masters of Engineering Studies in Fire Engineering in addition to the full time work he carries out as a structural engineer.

Hamish has gained international experience in mechanical engineering working for large multinational firms in both Engineering Consulting, and Engineer, Procure and Construction areas of the power generation industry. The work has been based both in Australia and for more than half a decade in Switzerland.

Out of work hours, Hamish counts himself lucky to be able to enjoy family life as well as half a lifetime of off the planet experiences in paragliding, a new found passion for astronomy and a loyal dachshund.

Kylie joined CGW at the beginning of 2018 as an engineer geologist based in the Nelson office. She has 6 years’ experience working across New Zealand after gaining a undergraduate degree from Victoria University in Wellington.

Kylies experience includes mining and exploration, geotechnical investigations for residential, roading and commercial structures, environmental studies and monitoring, ground remediation and slope stability analysis. She is working towards gaining her charted engineering geologist status through Engineering New Zealand.

Kylie spends her spare time in the outdoors and traveling throughout New Zealand.

Emma Munro - Structural Engineer

Emma studied Civil Engineering majoring in Structural Engineering at the University of Auckland. In her 9 years of experience since graduating, Emma has worked in Auckland and overseas in London.  She has been involved in design and build teams specialising in large residential houses, seismic assessments and strengthening, apartment buildings, and sculptures.  Emma enjoys getting out to site when she can and liaising with clients and contractors to ensure her designs are practical and economical.

Emma is a Chartered Structural Engineer with the Institution of Structural Engineers and Engineering New Zealand.  In 2018, Emma moved to Nelson and joined CGW as part of their structural team. 

In her spare time, Emma loves getting out and about, both locally and internationally, experiencing and travelling the world.She is also an avid reader, enjoys socialising, and music.

Farhad Darani - Structural Engineer

With a BE in civil engineering and a MSc in structural engineering, Farhad joined CGW in 2020 with more than 10 years engineering and research experience in the Structural Engineering field in various roles in Iran and New Zealand.

Farhad moved to New Zealand in 2017 when he took an interest in low-damage structures and started his PhD here in New Zealand.  His PhD research focuses on the application of new self-centring friction dampers in rocking concrete shear walls.

Farhad has expertise in seismic assessment, retrofitting and design of structures and seismic design of low-damage structures.  He has also experience designing residential and industrial buildings.

In his spare time, Farhad enjoys spending time with family and friends and scenic and off-road driving.

Andy joined CGW in 2019 as a graduate structural engineer. After graduating from Unitec Institute of Technology he worked on residential design in Auckland for a year before joining CGW. He enjoys doing structural design as much as getting on site to ensure projects are being done nicely and builder friendly.

 Andy is passionate about all varieties of structural design from residential to commercial. He is also keen on geotechnical engineering such as pile and retaining wall design.

 Outside of work Andy enjoys driving and fishing and is an experienced table tennis player. He also likes travelling and meeting new people from different cultural backgrounds.

Marcel Messemaker - Structural Draughtsman

Marcel joined CGW in 2009 and has 30 years of Structural Draughting experience comprising Structural Steelwork, Reinforced Concrete, Precast Panels & Timber Construction. He initially spent several years on the board in the pre-computer days, followed by AutoCad, Microstation and is currently 3D modelling in Revit Structure (BIM).

In his leisure time Marcel pursues a keen interest in Music, Photography & Video projects, frequents local Cafes and the Theatre/Cinema.

Weather permitting he can often be found in the sky over Abel Tasman as an enthusiastic Skydiver with over 1200 jumps.

In 2018, she completed her Diploma in Accounting. She is an AT member of Chartered Accountants Association of New Zealand.

Sarah is a Cantabrian and moved to Nelson in 2014.  She has travelled to different places around the world and has lived and worked in America, Japan and England.  In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, running and hiking.

Louise hails from the Emerald Isle of Ireland and joined CGW in 2014. At CGW she looks after the Human Resources, Payroll and Health & Safety.

She has an extensive amount of administrative experience and knowledge from having worked in Local Government, Banking, Horticulture and Engineering Sectors throughout her career. Louise also provides additional support to the Directors & Management team as part of her day to day functions.

She has a certificate in Business Management and has completed papers in Human Resources Management. She is also a trained Health & Safety Representative.

Louise has been living in Nelson for over 7 years and loves the lifestyle Nelson can provide her. She enjoys spending time with her family, mountain biking and yoga.
