Client: Abel Tasman Ocean View Chalets
Project: Abel Tasman Ocean View Chalets Wastewater
The objective of the project was to upgrade an existing failing wastewater system for this holiday accommodation facility with up to 20 guests and 6 bedroom manager’s residence at the gateway to the iconic Abel Tasman National Park, and obtain resource consent for that upgraded system. CGW provided site and soil evaluation, system design, and construction monitoring.
Being located in such a high profile tourist area and near to the beach, effective wastewater treatment was critical in this highly sensitive environment. An environmentally sustainable and energy efficient solution was a requirement of the client. High groundwater also needed to be taken into consideration in the design.
Utilising the existing primary (septic) tanks, a subsurface flow wetland (‘reedbed’) was developed to treat the effluent to secondary quality prior to discharging via subsurface drip irrigation, for final polishing through the sandy soil at the site.
